Lupine fields as far as the eye can see, each breath you take awash in perfume. For a few weeks each spring, this is the North Table Mountain Ecological Preserve in Oroville, California, a perched tableland where millions of wildflowers meet the sky unencumbered. I drenched my brushes with spring colors and let emotive brushwork do the talking. What is not told, however, is that this garden was eerily silent. A full day of hiking and I counted only two bees.
