Monterey Bay has a cool blue color unique unto itself and I’ve painted it multiple times for that reason. On this day, I got to the rocky shoreline while it was still dark in order to catch those moments before sunrise when the colors glow with what seems like an inner fire—a phenomenon known as the gloaming. Well, let’s just say I am even more obsessed with its colors now! I used blocky textured brushwork to capture the motion of sea and sky, and a tropical green underpaint to bring out the surprising warmth of the cool.
