Shrubland Vista — 40×30 in

If you can believe it, this is my son’s front yard. They live high in the hills above Glenwood Springs, Colorado, and I cannot tell you how many pictures in all seasons and times of day I have taken of this shrubland vista—like four years worth of visits—and until now, I have been too intimidated to paint it. Finally, I took the leap. I love the sky, of course, but the challenge for me was the grasses and shrubs, this sensual understated landscape that is new to my brush. It always excites me to interpret an ecosystem in a way that feels true to its nature and I’m thrilled with how this came out. By the way, those green “rolling hills” aren’t hills at all, but waves of shrub oak in full summer dress. Enjoy the high desert rocking its stuff 7000 feet above sea level.
